A Hospital Runs on Far More Than Doctors
For every consultant a patient meets, a dozen other people have already touched their visit: the executive who registered them, the attendant who wheeled them to radiology, the nurse who checked their vitals, the technician who ran the sample, and the housekeeper who disinfected the room before they arrived. Large private hospitals are among the steadiest employers in Indian cities precisely because this work never stops, day or night.
Fortis Healthcare is one of the country's major private healthcare networks, with hospitals and diagnostic facilities across several states. This article is an independent editorial overview — we are not a recruiter and are not affiliated with Fortis — and the salary figures are indicative market ranges rather than an official pay table.
Roles Hospitals Hire For
Hospital vacancies split into clinical, allied-health, and support categories. The distinction matters because qualification rules are completely different for each.
- Staff nurse: patient monitoring, medication support, documentation, and assisting doctors in wards, ICU, emergency, OT, and speciality units
- Nursing assistant / patient care assistant: helps nurses with mobility, basic comfort, and routine non-clinical care
- Ward boy / hospital attendant: moves patients and equipment, prepares beds, and supports admissions and discharges
- Housekeeping staff: cleans and sanitises rooms, corridors, and public areas under infection-control procedures
- Front office staff: registration, appointments, billing coordination, and patient queries
- Lab, OT, radiology and pharmacy staff: technical roles requiring recognised diplomas or degrees
- Security and administrative staff: access control, documentation, and back-office coordination

Qualifications: Where the Bar Really Sits
Nursing is a regulated profession. Staff nurse vacancies normally ask for GNM or B.Sc. Nursing along with valid registration, and ICU, emergency, or operation-theatre posts often require department-specific experience on top. Technician roles need the relevant diploma or degree.
Support roles are far more accessible. Ward boy, attendant, and housekeeping positions generally look for basic schooling, physical fitness, the ability to follow instructions, and willingness to work shifts. Prior hospital experience helps but is frequently not mandatory, which makes these roles a realistic entry point for freshers.

Why Hospital Housekeeping Is Not Ordinary Cleaning
This is the point most applicants underestimate. Cleaning a ward is a clinical-safety task: there are set procedures for biomedical waste segregation, colour-coded bins, disinfectant dilution, and the order in which a patient room is cleaned. New staff are trained on these protocols, and following them precisely is what supervisors watch for. People who take that seriously tend to be promoted to team leader roles fastest.
Shifts and Working Hours
Hospitals operate around the clock, so most patient-facing and support jobs rotate through morning, evening, and night shifts, including weekends and public holidays. Ask during the interview how rotations work, whether night shifts carry an allowance, and how weekly offs are scheduled. If nights are impossible for you, say so early — front-office and administrative roles tend to have more regular hours.
Where the Vacancies Are
The network's facilities are concentrated in Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and West Bengal. Metro hospitals hire in the largest numbers and usually pay towards the higher end of each range, but the cost of living narrows that gap. For support roles in particular, living within a reasonable commute of the hospital is a genuine advantage in shortlisting.
How to Apply the Right Way
Use official routes first.
- Search the careers section of the official Fortis Healthcare website, which groups openings by nursing, medical support, and other functions
- Filter by city and read the full job description — 'patient care' and 'nursing' are not interchangeable categories
- Prepare a one-page CV listing your qualification, registration number where relevant, and any hospital experience
- Apply online, then keep your phone and email reachable for a screening call
- For housekeeping and security, ask which facility-management or security agency holds the contract — these roles are often outsourced
What Interviews Focus On
Nursing interviews test clinical basics: vital signs, medication safety, infection control, and how you handled a difficult patient or an emergency. Ward boy and attendant interviews are practical — safe patient lifting, stretcher and wheelchair handling, and attitude towards shift work. Housekeeping candidates are usually asked about hygiene routines and reliability. In every case, punctuality and a respectful manner with patients' families count heavily.
Documents to Keep Ready
Have clear copies in one folder so you can respond quickly.
- Aadhaar and PAN card
- Educational certificates and, for clinical roles, professional registration
- Experience and relieving letters, if any
- Passport-size photographs and bank account details
- Vaccination or medical fitness records if requested
Beware of Fake Hospital Job Offers
Hospital brand names are widely misused in recruitment fraud. A genuine employer will not ask for a registration fee, security deposit, or payment for an offer letter. Verify any vacancy on the official careers page, be cautious of interviews conducted only over WhatsApp, and never share OTPs or banking credentials with a 'recruiter'.
