Why Families Everywhere Are Searching
A generation ago, a new baby in an Indian household was looked after by grandparents, aunts, and cousins living under the same roof. Today, in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and increasingly in smaller cities, many couples live far from family and both parents work. Someone still needs to feed, bathe, soothe, and watch the child — and that has made the baby caretaker one of the most sought-after household roles in the country.
The job requires no degree, but it does require something harder to certify: trustworthiness. This is an independent editorial guide with approximate salary figures; we are not a placement agency.

- Playing with the child and supporting early learning
- Washing the baby's clothes and keeping the nursery clean
- Watching for fever, rashes, or unusual behaviour and telling the parents at once

Newborn Care: The Highest-Paid Speciality
Care in the first weeks after birth is a distinct skill. Families hire a specialist — often called a japa maid — to look after both the newborn and the recovering mother: massage and bathing for the baby, help with feeding, night-time care, and sometimes preparing the mother's meals. Contracts are typically short, around forty days to three months, and because the work is intensive and involves nights, monthly pay is usually higher than for general babysitting. Experienced newborn specialists are booked months ahead.
Live-In or Day Shift?
Live-in work pays more in effective terms because food and lodging are covered, and it suits caretakers who have migrated from another state. The cost is privacy and time: hours can blur, so agree on a weekly off, daily rest, and sleeping arrangements before starting. Day-shift work — commonly eight to twelve hours — lets you return home each evening and is easier to combine with your own family.
Skills Families Look For
Experience helps, but parents hire on character.
- Patience and a calm, affectionate manner with children
- Strict personal hygiene and cleanliness
- Alertness to safety — small objects, hot liquids, stairs, balconies
- Honesty and respect for the family's privacy
- Basic knowledge of infant feeding, sleep, and common illnesses
- Clear communication in Hindi or the local language
- Ability to use a phone to send updates and call in an emergency
Documents and Verification
Expect to be asked for identity and background checks; a family is handing you their child. Keep these ready.
- Aadhaar card and one other photo ID
- Address proof — permanent and current
- Passport-size photographs
- Police verification, which most families and agencies now request
- References from previous employers
- Any childcare, nursing-assistant, or first-aid certificate
- Medical fitness or vaccination records if requested
How to Find Work
There are several reliable routes.
- Registered domestic-help and childcare placement agencies in your city
- Online platforms and apps that match families with verified caretakers
- Daycare centres, crèches, and preschools, which hire assistants directly
- Maternity hospitals and nursing bureaus, for newborn-care placements
- Referrals from families you have worked for — the most trusted source of all
Protecting Yourself
Safety applies to the worker as well as the child. Before joining, visit the home and meet the family, and tell a relative the address. Agree salary, hours, weekly off, leave, and duties clearly — ideally in writing — so that you are not gradually handed cooking and full housework for the same pay. Keep your original documents with you; an employer or agency has no right to hold them. A genuine agency takes its fee from the family, not a large advance from you.
Career Growth
With experience, a caretaker can specialise in newborn care, move into daycare or preschool assistant roles, or become a supervisor at a childcare centre. Short courses offered under the government's skill-development programmes in childcare, home health, or general duty assistance add credibility and can open the door to hospital and elder-care work, which pays more.
