Selling the Second-Biggest Purchase of Someone's Life
After a home, a car is the most expensive thing most families ever buy. They arrive at the showroom having watched reviews for weeks, compared loan rates, and argued about colours. The person who meets them — and guides them from test drive to delivery — has a job that mixes product knowledge, finance, and a good deal of patience.
MG is a carmaker with a growing dealer network across India and a line-up that leans heavily on connected features and electric models. This is an independent editorial guide: we are not a recruiter and are not affiliated with MG or any dealership, and pay figures are approximate.
First, Who Is the Employer?
Showrooms and service centres are owned and run by independent dealer companies, not by the manufacturer. If you join a dealership, that dealer group is your employer: it sets your salary, incentive scheme, and working conditions. This is standard across the car industry, and it explains why pay for the same job title differs between two showrooms in the same city.

Roles at a Dealership
A dealership is two businesses under one roof — sales and service.
- Sales consultant / relationship manager: handles enquiries, test drives, finance and insurance tie-ups, booking, and delivery
- Service advisor: receives vehicles, diagnoses customer complaints, prepares job cards, and explains the bill
- Technician / EV technician: carries out servicing and repairs, including high-voltage systems on electric models
- Customer relationship executive / receptionist: greets visitors, makes follow-up calls, and tracks satisfaction
- Driver / delivery driver: moves vehicles for test drives, pick-up and drop, and stockyard transfers
- Cashier / accounts assistant: handles payments, receipts, and daily reconciliation
- Spare parts executive / warehouse helper: issues parts to the workshop and manages stock
Commonly Advertised Pay Ranges
The figures below reflect what is commonly advertised for comparable dealership roles. They are approximate and not official company numbers. In sales, incentives per car sold — plus commissions on finance, insurance, and accessories — can add significantly to the fixed amount.

Eligibility and What Dealers Look For
Sales roles are open to 12th pass candidates and graduates, including freshers; a driving licence is strongly preferred because you will conduct test drives. Service advisors usually hold an ITI, diploma, or degree in a mechanical or automobile field. Technicians need an ITI or diploma, with additional training for EVs.
Beyond certificates, dealers look for neat presentation, clear speech, comfort with phone follow-ups and CRM apps, and honesty. A salesperson who over-promises on delivery dates or discounts creates problems the dealer then has to solve.
Selling Electric Cars Is Different
Customers considering an EV ask different questions, and a consultant who can answer them confidently has an edge.
- Real-world range versus the certified figure, and how driving style and air conditioning affect it
- Home charger installation, charging time, and the public charging network
- Battery warranty terms and expected battery life
- Running cost per kilometre compared with petrol or diesel
- Battery-rental or subscription ownership options, where the brand offers them
- State subsidies, road-tax benefits, and resale expectations
A Day as a Service Advisor
Mornings are the rush: customers drop off cars before work, each with a complaint to translate into a job card. You estimate cost and time, get approval, and hand the car to a technician. Through the day you chase parts, update customers, and call for approval if extra work is found. Evenings are deliveries — walking the customer through the invoice and the work done. It is a role for organised people who stay calm when a customer is unhappy with a bill.
How to Apply
Use direct and verifiable routes.
- Find authorised dealers through the brand's official website and visit or email them with your CV
- Check dealer groups' own career pages and their listings on job portals
- Look on the National Career Service portal for automobile sales and service vacancies
- Ask about walk-in interview days — dealerships recruit frequently
- Carry your ID, education certificates, driving licence, photographs, and experience letters
Interview Preparation
Study the current model range, prices, and two or three competitors before you go. Be ready to 'sell' a car to the interviewer, explaining features in terms of benefits rather than specifications. Expect questions on handling a customer who wants a larger discount, on meeting monthly targets, and on working weekends — showrooms are busiest on Saturdays and Sundays, with a weekday off.
Career Path
Sales consultants progress to senior consultant, team leader, sales manager, and general manager. Service advisors move to senior advisor, works manager, and service head. Technicians who gain EV and diagnostic certification are increasingly sought after as electric models multiply. Experience at one brand transfers readily to others.
Avoid Fake Car Showroom Job Offers
Fraudsters use carmakers' names to offer jobs in exchange for 'registration', 'training', or 'uniform' fees. No genuine dealer charges candidates. Verify that the dealership is listed on the brand's official dealer locator, attend interviews in person at the showroom, and never share OTPs or bank PINs.
