Trainers, Jerseys, and a First Job
Sportswear is no longer just for sport. Sneakers go to college, to the office, and to weddings, and that shift has filled Indian malls and high streets with brand stores that need staff who can talk about cushioning, fit, and the latest collaboration with equal ease. For a 12th pass student or recent graduate, a sportswear store is one of the more enjoyable ways to start working: the product is familiar, the atmosphere is young, and good sellers are noticed quickly.
PUMA is a global sports brand with one of the larger store networks in India. This is an independent editorial guide — we are not a recruiter and are not affiliated with PUMA — and the salary figures are approximate.
How the Stores Are Run
Brand outlets in India operate under two models. Some are run by the company; many others are operated by franchise partners or large retail operators who hold the licence for a city or region. The store looks identical to a shopper, but for an employee the difference is real: your employer, salary structure, incentive scheme, and HR policies are those of whoever runs that outlet. Check the name on your offer letter.

Popular Store Roles
Most stores are small teams where roles overlap.
- Retail sales associate: greets customers, finds sizes, explains product technology, suggests add-ons, and keeps the floor tidy
- Cashier / billing associate: handles payments, returns and exchanges, loyalty sign-ups, and end-of-day cash
- Stock associate / back-store helper: receives cartons, tags and stores stock, and keeps sizes replenished
- Junior visual merchandiser: dresses mannequins and sets up walls and tables to brand guidelines
- Assistant store manager / team leader: runs shifts, tracks targets, coaches staff, and deals with escalations

| 12th pass, talkative, into sport | Retail sales associate | Customer contact and incentive potential |

A Typical Day in the Store
The team arrives before opening to clean, restock sizes, check displays, and review the day's target. Weekday mornings are quiet — time for product training and stock work. From late afternoon, and all weekend, the floor is busy: measuring feet, fetching sizes from the back, suggesting socks or a bag, and managing trial-room queues. Closing means recovery of the floor, cash tally, and preparing for the next day. Expect to be on your feet for most of a nine-hour shift.
Selection Process
Hiring is usually quick. After CV screening, you meet the store manager for a face-to-face interview focused on communication, energy, and availability. Many stores add a short role-play — selling a shoe to the interviewer — or a product question. Selected candidates receive an offer and submit Aadhaar, PAN, mark sheets, bank details, and photographs.
Interview Tips That Work
Visit a store beforehand and notice how staff approach customers. Learn two or three current shoe families and what each is for — running, training, lifestyle. In the role-play, ask the 'customer' what they will use the shoe for before recommending anything; interviewers are checking whether you listen. Dress smart-casual and clean, and be straightforward about weekend availability.
Growth and Benefits to Confirm
The usual path runs from sales associate to senior associate, team leader, assistant store manager, and store manager, with side routes into visual merchandising and training. Before joining, confirm in writing your fixed pay and incentive rules, PF and ESI coverage, weekly off, staff discount, and uniform policy.
Beware of Fake PUMA Job Offers
Scammers copy brand logos to advertise jobs and then demand a 'registration' or 'uniform' fee. Genuine employers never charge candidates. Verify vacancies on the company's official careers page or at the store itself, distrust offers made only over WhatsApp, and report fraud on the national cybercrime portal or the 1930 helpline.
